Country Walk

Walking along a stream I saw, in morning mist, a punt
pulled up the bank, took my shoes and socks off, pushed
the boat out, jumped onboard and began slowly drifting.
The stream was flanked by tall trees their Hydra arms
leaned down into the stream as wanting to wash away ancient
sins, seeking absolution of yore when their arms were used
to hang thieves and witches from. The stream widened,
cows’ drinking water seeing me retreated mooing indignantly.
Near a carriageway the stream widened to a lake of silt before
going underground, I pulled the punt up my feet got muddy,
this was reality the voyage, a dream, a romantic abstraction,
tried to dry my feet on wet cold grass, didn’t succeed,
but put socks and shoes on hoping that I wouldn’t be met
with an accident sent to hospital were a nurse would say:
“Look at that man’s feet has he never had proper bath?
Walked along the hard shoulder when a police car stopped,
the one who wasn’t driving asked if I had had a breakdown,
I hesitated, but didn’t answer as his idea of a breakdown and
mine were not the same, instead I pointed to the stream:
“You came from there” “Yes I’m Neptune on holiday looking
for a river mermaid” and the rest of the day became a B. movie
slamming doors and mugs of coffee, de-lousing and a bath.

the night falls upon me
all that’s left is sleep.
the sweetness of your kiss
still lingers on my lips.
I turn off Sade,
blow out the candles
and put out the incense;
but you still burn in me.
I soak my body to
wash you away,
my body feels clean
but my mind wanders in vain.
I fall into bed,
sleep will be my escape.
I take a deep breath
and you’re in my sheets…

She Devil

© 2006 oskar

Sunday, the lane rested only footfalls of a rare
walker purred, when I saw the black clad woman,
go my way and sensed glad hips sway under her
dress, a life not yoked into cold widowhood yet.

Then she flapped her wings and I shrunk in fear,
the devil dressed in a woman’s body, I had heard
of that, now a temptress, luring lonely men into
her fold only, to eat them in moments of ecstasy.

I stood still she had no footfall, she stopped too
listened for my heartbeat, I turned away and fell
instantly in love with an almond tree that began
snowing pink flowers… and the she devil swore.
