Ballad of the Nan

© 2008 Martin

At my desk today, but ‘e looks rather flat
What’s up ol’friend, do tell us where’s your cheer
Sit down you all pull up a stool, come draw near
You know of ol’, stories o’cantankerous Mrs Pat

Well I spent last night a’kipping, on t’dirty sofa bed
Me back tis bent and broken, ’m cleaved apart in two
I tossed and turned all through, I din’t know what a do
I’m filled w’regret, I wish it could all be undone unsaid

T’was early last evening, when me woe it did begin
Me fish tank did need a clean, t’water had taken dark
I were washin’ every piece of it, I ‘ad it all apart
“Pat” she says “Our supper, we need to get it in”

Said I, as quick “Let’s have t’Indian take away”
“But don’t phone yet, I’m not caught up nor even rightly done”
“When tank’s up and runnin’ then I will order it to come”
You see I like food ‘ot and fresh to plate, not in t’oven stay

But me tank it gave such jip, took double extra time
Be now I were so ‘ungry, I’d nearly lost me head
Mrs Pat had gone against me, and slyly gone ahead
I came into the kitchen, to see her serving up all fine

That t’was when it happened and everything went bad
I knew the food were wrong, She’d left it on the cooker
I picked up me peshwari nan, t’were cold and not a looker
In rage I threw t’bread at startled Mrs Pat, her face came over sad

I watched the nuts and raisins, as down her blouse they fell
Then time it went so slow, as me nan it slid t’floor
We’er fist she blacked me eye, and kicked me out t’door
Seems we still not talking, I ain’t found any words to tell

So the moral of this tale, he told us with renewed cheer
Fish and chips is the way forward and never should you veer
