Outfitting a potting bench
A potting bench is like a star’s dressing room; it’s where you primp and polish flowerpots and the plants that go in them before they make their debut on the big stage in the garden. Potting benches give a gardener a place to work — and to play.
Pots, plants, bags of potting soil, hand tools, plant tags and the many odds and ends of gardening projects will all find a place on a potting bench.
“It’s kind of like having a great desk,” says Helen Thompson, a garden designer in the Kansas City area. The potting bench in her backyard is the centerpiece of its own garden room.
“When you have a potting bench, you have a place to put things,” she says, “but I wanted to make it a comfortable place, too. It’s where I create, design, hang out and clean up. I use it constantly.”
A good potting bench will take center stage, but working out the right spot for it can be a little bit of a challenge. Ideally, a potting bench should be close to a spigot or at least within reach of a hose. The area has to be able to stand a little dirt and water, and some shelter from the wind and rain is desirable. A corner of a patio, or a spot on the back porch or up against the garage often works well. A potting bench can transform an awkward side yard into a pretty and useful space. Above all, the location should be convenient — someplace you’ll naturally tend to go.
