Measure for measure in the yard and garden

Here are a few ideas to make approximate measurements with hands, feet and arms from my trusty old 1001 Hints and Tips For Your Garden.
The length from the tip of a finger to the very first knuckle is about 1 inch. Of course, I measured this, and if my fingernails were a bit longer it would be spot on. Hands come in all sizes, but when planting seeds, a smidgen of difference probably wont make a difference.
Put your index finger, middle finger and ring finger together. At the second knuckle you have between 2 to 2¾ inches. Enough for most bedding plants for depth and maybe double it for width.
Spread your hands out fully and the distance from little finger to thumb is about 7 to 9 inches. You can safely plant daffodils, tulip, lilies and potatoes. Gladioli need this depth so they dont topple over.
