Unhinged

Through an open doorway there is a garden, green and sunlit, and a paved walk. A black and white cat rolls on its back. There are several white geese, long necked and curious, peeking in.
In the next picture, centred in the same opening sits the silhouette of
a dog, looking out. In another, a red sports car is parked at the end of the walk. There are pages of these. Each one same doorway, different day.
This was when I lived in Australia and I lived with Joe.
In our first house together, he built ledge and brace doors that were divided in half. In the heat of the day, the top half was left open so the flies could get out and the light flood in. In summer, fat blue-tongued lizards crawled in to cool their bellies on the slate. As I sat studying for exams I would hear the soft scrape of scaly legs advancing across the floor.
