Friend Marilyn texted me about a great winter coat sale. I found a wonderfully warm coat for only $20. In fact, an attached tag said this coat was good for up to 20 degrees below zero. Immediately, I was transported back to my first job as a photojournalist at a small daily newspaper in southeastern Iowa.
I learned much in that job. I learned that a deadline was a deadline and if I missed one I would be fired. I didn't have a Plan B, so I never missed one. I learned that if I made a mistake to admit it immediately, deal with the consequences and then to move on because there wasn't time to wallow in it. That was for the hogs I had to photograph on the confinement farm, usually in 15 minutes from right now.
I learned that I didn't go home until the job was done. Then I learned that the job was never done. Night meetings. Sporting events. Accidents and fires that always seemed to happen at 3 a.m. Weekends. Holidays. No day was sacred. No time was really off. I was always looking for that next image.
