Wilson Bay offers a great place to park

I was off work Tuesday. With all of our kids in school, my wife and I headed into Jacksonville for one of our sole remaining treats — dining alone.

We ordered our food but instead of eating at the restaurant, I suggested we try something different so we drove downtown and ate lunch at Wilson Bay Park.

It was like an hour in heaven.

The weather was very agreeable, warm with a cool breeze. The setting was absolutely serene with waterfowl drifting on the bay and squirrels frolicking in the fallen leaves.

As we sat at a picnic table and ate, I took in the activity surrounding us.

An elderly couple took digital pictures of themselves in the gazebo out over the water. A couple with a young girl cooked hotdogs on a grill. A man in his early 20s fed bread crumbs to birds and fish while chatting inaudibly on his cellphone.

Earlier when we arrived, a woman sitting in a car to left of us was reading a book and a woman in a car to the right was eating a sandwich.
