Get a jump start on the holidays with the fifth annual Holiday Under the Stars festival in downtown Yorkville.
While most towns traditionally wait until the day after Thanksgiving to light their trees and usher in the big guy in red, Yorkville is beating the turkey to the punch this year. The weekend festivities include a tree lighting ceremony and Santa’s first visit of the season; plus a Kris Kringle market, Taste of Yorkville, free trolley rides, ice skating and the annual Chili Chase 5K run.
The tree lighting ceremony will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in the town square, said Tim Evans, superintendent of recreation and special events with Yorkville’s Parks and Recreation department.
“It’s evolved over the years. The Chamber of Commerce used to do kind of a Christmas walk-type of thing,” he said. “It evolved into the City talking it over and making it more of a Holiday under the Stars before Christmas to highlight businesses here in town. This year we made it a whole weekend of events.”
