Skateboarders exact toll on Fire Dance
Damage to public art and monuments caused by skateboarders and inline skaters is a problem faced by municipalities worldwide. Wellington, New Zealand had to cough up $20,000 to repair a ceramic tile monument to Admiral Byrd depicting the Aurora Australis, or southern lights. At least 400 of the tiles were damaged by skateboarders, prompting ceramicist Doreen Blumhardt to say, "Children need to be better educated to understand public works of art, to better appreciate them." In Blumhardt's case, the repairs were complicated by the fact that the colors had to be blended in with the rest of the tiles, which were colorized ten years earlier.
Sculptor David Black does not face that challenge, but he has been asked by the City to come up with a plan for protecting Fire Dance from further damage.
"We contacted him as soon as we discovered the damage, and asked him to devise some means of protecting the bench and sculpture from skateboarders" said Public Works Department Administrative Services Manager Donna Lovejoy.
