Although I’ve lived here all my life, it’s surprising how little I knew about Dartmouth. After all, they were two separate cities not too long ago, and I grew up on the west end of Halifax — with little opportunity (i.e., no ‘wheels’ of my own) to explore the community on the other side of the bridge. I have friends who grew up in Dartmouth and felt the same about Halifax.

Today Dartmouth and Halifax are one in the same, at least as far as the Halifax Regional Municipality is concerned. Regardless of amalgamation, however, Dartmouth has retained its individuality and certainly has a lot to offer by way of shopping, recreation, beautiful views and residential opportunities.

Case in point — Ochterloney St. This offshoot of Alderney is a minute’s jaunt from the waterfront, ferry terminal and the Dartmouth Sportsplex. The street features one the province’s most respected and popular spas (Interlude) and the famous Two If By Sea — a coffee and pastry shop that hooks its customers on the freshest, most indescribably buttery croissants and huge, soft cookies. Next door to this is The Nectar Social House, Restaurant and Wine Bar — which speaks for itself.
