Columns add elegance, inside and out

Thomas Mack of Architectural Products by Outwater LLC, Bogota (outwater.com), said common locations for columns include:

* The entrance of a home, flanking either side of the entry.

* Within porch structures.

* In the back yard, as part of the landscaping.

"A lot of people invest time, money and effort in beautifying their back yards and landscaping by using columns," Mack said. "I often see builders ordering columns to use with pergolas and covered patios, as well."

Mack said columns can go wherever the homeowner, the designer or the builder wants to add an architectural focal point that will boost the "wow" factor. "With a variety of columns now being so readily available at affordable prices, I see homeowners and builders often adding columns to bathrooms, kitchens, great rooms, entry foyers - you name it!" he said.

Signs of Trouble

Water and insect damage tend to be the two main reasons why a home’s original columns may need to be replaced, according to Glen Gustafson of The Bergen Home Wright, Oradell (bergenhomewright.com).
