Pergola project taking root
The Community Waterfront Friends made its first payment to the city Monday as part of its $1-million share in the latest phase of the waterfront development project.
Rod Johnston and Hariett Madigan presented a $100,000 cheque to the city on behalf of the group, promising more instalments will come as the Leaves of Inspiration Pergola fundraiser pushes on.
So far, the waterfront friends have sold about 400 pergola leaves and have commitments for the purchase of another 300 or so.
Johnston admits the group expected to have sold more by now. But he's confident all 2,500 leaves will eventually be purchased and added to a garden pergola that will be installed in May at the Oak Street entrance to the waterfront park near the Discovery North Bay museum.
We know it's a good idea and we know a lot of people intend on buying one," said Johnston, noting the group expects sales to pick up once the pergola is installed and people are able to see exactly what they've been talking about.
