Chelsea Flower Show 2013: the contenders for best show garden
This is a garden for the blind and partially sighted (which no one could guess from the title, thanks to the Royal School for the Blind's mystifying rebrand). This is a first Chelsea outing for the sponsor, Coutts bank, and the Cornwall-based designer, so it would be unreasonable to expect instant perfection. It's a sensory garden dominated by materials – on-end slates for the radial paths, opaque glass screens and a curtain of stainless steel balls with water cascading down them. A large robinia stands at the centre, with 10 smaller ginkgos at the edges. The planting takes a back seat, which is usually a strategic error if you are on the hunt for a gold medal. But Hawkes may well realise this on-site and pull off some thrilling planting (he has promised lots of lime green and purple) that will elevate the garden in the medal stakes. It is still unlikely to win Best in Show, however.
